Destination: Better Weather
With less than 4 days to go before my next trip, I figured it is time to let you in to some of the details.
Destination: Central America. Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua to be more precise. There is no actual itinerary, but one thing that’s quite sure is a couple of days diving on the Bay Islands, Honduras. Afterwards we’ll see where destiny takes us, hopefully to Managua, Nicaragua in time, because that’s where we’re flying back from.
Period: Three weeks, from the 4th of September until the 25th of September.
Company: Only Lindsay and myself. I think that the phrase “less is more” can certainly be used when it comes to travel company. The more people you’re travelling with, the more you have to take care of others, do stuff you didn’t really want to do, and so on.
It’s not that I’m anti-social or anything, I love meeting people along the way. But I don’t want to be responsible for them and want to have the possibility to leave them whenever I want.
Transportation: The trip to Central America and back will be by plane of course. Cheap as I am, I didn’t really pay attention to the travelling time or the number of stops but mostly to the price. This is how I ended up with following - all American Airlines - trips:
1. Brussels - London - Miami - San Pedro Sula
2. Managua - Miami - New York - Brussels
The local transportation will happen with whatever is possible. Mostly buses I guess but hopefully also boats, Tuc Tucs and different kinds of animals
Sights: As said before, there is no planning so there are no must-see or must-do’s, but I did create a small list of places that might be worth the visit if we happen to pass by.
Honduras: Diving at Bay Islands (this one is for sure), Copan Ruinas and the Macaw Mountain Bird park (which is close to Copan)
El Salvador: Los Cóbanos (small fishing village) and Perquin & El Mozote (centre of the guerrilla movement)
Nicaragua: Cities of Leon and Granada, the Cerro Negro volcano (where you can do volcano boarding) and Isla de Ometepe, an island in the middle of lake Nicaragua
Research: First of all, I’ve checked out BootsnAll for articles of the area, and further more I’ve read some blogs and forums for more hints and tips.
Packing list: My packing list can be found here. Feel free to use it, and please let me know if you think I forgot something.
Guidebook: Let’s Go Central America (9th edition, 2004)
Books: While travelling, I like to read adventurous books, preferably about travelling. Therefore I’ve decided to take “Robinson Crusoe” by Daniel Defoe and “Grounded: A Down to Earth Journey Around the World” by Seth Stevenson.
At the moment I’m reading “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Timothy Ferriss but I don’t think that’s a good book to read during holidays, so I’ll probably leave it home.
Camera: My good old Canon 450D with a Tamron 18-200mm objective
Wish me good luck, lots of fun, and many evenings filled with beer, rum and seafood!
